Now I'm wondering does this guy mean natural redheads or is okay with the fakes. There's a serious difference.

Who thinks I should ask this guy to pay off my student loan debts? No catches, no nothing. Remember the text of this ad says "I will do anything for you." It doesn't say squat about the redhead having to do something. Hey, if you want sexual favors for something, you've got to spell that out in your ads! Otherwise the lawyers like me will call you out on it & brand you a liar.

If I weren't married, I'd have to challenge this statement. Find the ad in Craig's List Missed Connections in NYC if you're so inclined to follow up on it.

I only browse the Missed Connections section if I'm really bored. One of my sorority sisters in Atlanta was once the subject of one (she found out & posted it on Facebook) so I always wonder if that has happened to me. God knows I get enough compliments on my appearance. Not that I'd follow up or anything but it's one of those "I can't help but wonder" type things. My husband & I thought of posting such ads to each other as a lark.

This ad is a textbook example of the redhead fetishist. Nearly every group and type you can think of has fetishists in it, people who only like someone b/c of their race, hair color, weight, etc. instead of the actual person inside.

My high school boyfriend was such a redhead fetishist. He made a whole big production about dating a redhead; the way you'd hear him talk, it was all about my looks instead of me, the person (who was probably as crazy & complex as today). Too bad that whole fetish wasn't enough for him to bother being faithful to me before the prom, which I didn't find out about until after graduation. The bastard (I dated quite a few of those)!

It also makes me wonder if half the guys who've approached me did so b/c they think about what they've heard about redheads & have assumptions about me. Higher sex drives, more likely to be interested in freakier stuff & more are some of what you'll hear about natural redheads. Maybe we natural redheads should get to start carrying tasers for our own safety. I certainly don't know of any who would object to doing so.

Reading this ad after reading these two stories about interview processes that employers should be shot for and about the "new normal" in student loan debt make me wonder if attractive young people are going to have to seek out fetishists who have money in order to get someplace in this life. Or if people in general will have to do that.

I totally see stuff like that happening with the pathetic prospects in store for people right now. If someone did that successfully, they could probably become a working class hero especially if they managed to use human nature against one of the members of "the evil 1%."

I'm kind of surprised none of the law school scam bloggers have suggested this (pimping yourself out, I guess we could call it) as a solution to paying off student loan debt. Perhaps most lawyers aren't what we would brand as "industry pretty" so maybe this approach wouldn't work for them? Maybe they lack charm, likeability & charisma to successfully get someone to do such things (if you're insincere about the person it's manipulation but if you have some warm feeling for them I think "manipulation" is the wrong word)? But if you're in dire straits wouldn't you use each and every asset, advantage, and skill you've got to get out of that situation?

One has to wonder about that future. Maybe once this happens, people will get off their butts & protest. I don't think people want society at large to be that Reba McEntire song "Fancy." I'm not a country fan at all but I heard someone sing this song at my karaoke place in Atlanta & you could see the lyrics at this place. I read them; they are fucking dark & depressing. Read them for yourself & tell me that's not one of the most depressing songs out there.

Country tricks you as a genre; it doesn't sound like it but when you read many of the song lyrics, some of them are just as dark as anything from the goth point of view.

And maybe you should explain the relevance of some of your listed requirements. Funny, but this isn't a job where one needs to "intern" to do it. I'm a lawyer so I most certainly know this for a fact. If you can't afford to pay a living wage to a professional, stop wasting everyone's time looking for a freebie.

Maybe someone should investigate you for ethics violations considering this is likely illegal under state & federal ethics laws. You're not even paying for people's travel. In reality, you're charging people to work for YOU.

We did this in law school. It was called an internship. During those internships, we worked on the legal matters around our class schedules. We did not have to slave day & night on a case in the law school clinic unless it was the summer & then, we got work study rates i.e. we were PAID for our time in either school credit or hard earned money.

I was not asked to do that when my clinic was doing a trial the summer I worked there (I was on the work study rate of $10 an hour; yes, this was the work study hourly rate for law students when I was in school). Nor was I required to have a law license ahead of time.

For those who aren't lawyers, let me tell you something about trials. Trials are like working as the lead actor on a major TV show or film. Your entire life is consumed by the trial. You have to work very long hours, you generally can't deal with anything else and it is a huge investment of time and energy. If you're doing a trial, you don't have a social life & you'll be lucky if you get 8 hours of sleep a night. In the big firms, associates working on trials don't get that luxury.

You have client meetings, depositions, research to conduct, etc. This is all part of trial prep. Oh, and you'll probably have to take work home since everything changes in a second & there's lots of rushing around involved.

Seeing this prick expecting people to give up their entire lives & offer zero in exchange is outright sick. Do you see a word about travel reimbursement? Meal reimbursement or paying for meals when late hours are required? This is a perfect example of slavery & it should not stand. This person should be reported & if I knew who it was, I would have to in good conscience.

Oh, and do you know how long trials last? They can run from a few days to a few months. Some even go into years. How do you know this person isn't trying to get freebies for a trial that will last half the year? You don't.

Those associates make over $100K a year to do that shit. If you're lucky, you're working 40 hours a week; those are considered part time hours to trial attorneys.

This goes back to that whole "don't be an asshole" rule. Even paying people the work study rate is better than expecting them to pay to work for you & give up their hunt for paying work.

Newsflash: not paying for someone's Metrocard is making someone pay to work for you if they can't work from their own house & you are making them come into your office.

I'm glad to see someone else schooling ignorant, pathetic people who don't even have the sense to get legal counsel or hide their ageism like everyone else. In fact, I send anonymous resumes for some jobs I see where employers posting the ads gave zero information. One person from a law firm said it was funny & got why I didn't want every Tom, Dick and Harry having my personal info though the job had already been filled.

Maybe I should look into this. Apparently, someone else thought my response to a so-called "joke" posting on LinkedIn was funny. Yes, I said "LinkedIn." You know, the site for professional networking & for professionals to interact?

I chewed someone out for trying to get legal services for free & subvert lawyers in favor of agents. I directly asked the poster how he'd like it if I asked him to do his actor coaching services for free with nothing for him in exchange. This guy then responds saying all lawyers who aren't Jewish are scumbags. I ream him out privately for bashing me as a non-Jew when he didn't know who the hell I was & informed him that there are plenty of people who own companies in Hollywood and elsewhere in the entertainment field who would consider him a bigot.

Now I know some perfectly nice Jewish people & some Jewish lawyers who are also good folk. In fact, I have a generally better attitude toward Jews (at least in America) since they aren't being obnoxious assholes to the general public & trying to impose their ways onto everyone else like the Christians are (the fundies & lunatic fringe, anyway; too few non-lunatic Christians stand up to these jerks & smack them down for their massive hypocrisy).

That, however, doesn't give anyone a pass to defame me or anyone who doesn't fit that category. He responds that "It was a joke" & I made his office laugh.

Okay...so was it actually a joke that you decided to post on a LinkedIn group (you know, that space for professionals to have professional conversations instead of just goofing around) or did someone have to cover b/c an angry redheaded lawyer wasn't taking shit & you didn't want her to share your refusal to listen to non-Jews with everyone she knew, including producers, production company owners, attorneys, etc.? My husband also claims I'm too blunt in writing cover letters. I suggested he write his own if he didn't like my style. I don't write wimpy letters oozing in desperation or engage in dog & pony shows. I give information I'd want if I were the employer. I also ask questions if someone can't bother answering them in their ad.

If they don't answer, that tells me they are not worth my time or consideration. If they ask me to send materials & then reject what I send, I really want to smack them. Latham & Watkins did that recently when I asked about a job for spouse. The HR person who'd told me his experience would be fine for a job opening they have posted multiple times over months writes back the next day to tell me it wouldn't be. I thought of writing her back & saying "Thanks for wasting my time. I know whose law firm will never be retained by anyone I know if a legal issue arises."

Seriously, business owners: what you do reflects on your reputation. If I think you're lazy, inefficient, a time waster, a jerk, a hypocrite, etc. I'm not going to bother with you. I'm going to look at any employee of yours with that mindset & presume they are also lazy, inefficient, a time waster, whatever. That is also why I try talking directly to the person in charge instead of HR. It is rare I find an HR person who can answer questions about applicants who are out of the box & hasn't wasted my time. Those people out to form an uprising & get the deadbeats out of their profession. Yeah, I'm all about uprisings.

Finally, quit trying to disguise freebie requests as "internships." We should punish that with arrest & imprisonment in a really nasty prison. Who's with me?

What the Holy Fuck?!?!? Craig's List Ads, Part 5

I was going to do a rant on how I feel like a second class citizen and excluded from bar associations I'm supposed to be paying all these ungodly dues toward but it seems I already covered that 2 years ago. Go here to see it. Still accurate & still holds up.

I also do still feel like a second class citizen with all that so just assume I'm not going to spend $25+ on a ticket to an event my husband wouldn't be welcomed at and where I wouldn't have the best company to deal with (since I'd likely know very few of the attendees if any & would be shocked if any bothered being genuinely nice to me or interested in anything I did or cared about).

I think there should either be an option for far cheaper tickets for young attorneys (let's say $20 each or $30 for couples if your spouse is also young, works for the government on any level & is making less than $75K a year or is unemployed) or a severe reduction in the dues we're paying if we can't even go to these annual parties & bashes. If we're such "riffraff" to the higher ups in the way these ticket prices are set, then why should we have to finance those affairs?

I'm also in a very bad mood since an event I was planning apparently can never happen at the time I want since the association closes an hour before my event would need to start on that day. Nice of anyone to TELL me this!!! I had to call & find out myself.

I also found out that if you want a large event & it's not a CLE, you will get zero time to publicize it & could very well have your event sabotaged. Sorry but my circle lives in a different sphere, has busy schedules and needs some notice. I'm trying to respect their time & make things convenient for them. After all, THEY are the ones doing favors here! They have their own cred & reputation. Having them is a privilege. Having me bring folk in is a privilege.

My problem here is the salary they offer. I made $8 an hour working at Godiva in Atlanta. When I interviewed for that job, my boss said my prior experience at JcPenney wasn't relevant to him. Yet I got hired anyway & did well while he was manager. I made $10 at other jobs in undergrad.

And no "former lawyer" I know of is so hard up that they're going to do all this stuff for a mere $8-10 an hour. You would have to do less in a retail job or even at the local fast food joint. Someone with prior experience at this stuff is not worth this piddling rate, which translates at below $25K a year in income. At part time hours, you're probably talking about qualifying for welfare benefits.

Go do some extra work for Central Casting instead. At least then you can maintain some dignity & wear clothes you wouldn't get to wear otherwise.

Sounds good until you do the math. Here's my response:

Your rate is illegal. Follow me on this little math calculation:

12 hrs a day x 7 days a week = 84 hours a week

600 (what you propose to pay a week) / 84 = 7.1428.....

In THIS state, minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Your rate is $7.14 an hour, which is clearly BELOW the minimum wage in NY. If you are lying about location, minimum wage is $7.25 an hour in NJ and higher than that in CT.

A little free advice: if you want a GOOD person who's going to give a damn & do the kind of work you want, you might want to pay a little better than minimum wage. Personal assistants performing the tasks at the hours you are asking for (at the expense of their own lives) make a good $70K+ a year.

Try at least $25 an hour if you want someone to give up their entire life for the next 2 months & during the holidays to boot. Come to think of it, considering you're asking folk to give up Christmas maybe you should offer around $40-50 an hour.

Guess who I'm making sure my company doesn't work with? No company needs the tainted association of or friendship with a business owner that doesn't bother knowing the basics of labor law or has any respect for interns, one of the most vulnerable groups in this industry.

I had to say something:

You DO know that full time internships are illegal under state & federal labor law, right? As in, you can't make someone work 40+ hours a week for free. That is NOT an internship; it is slavery & displacing professionals who have a value in the marketplace.

Not to mention that some of the tasks you list would require an intern to travel. Do you expect an INTERN to PAY to work for you? Without covering travel done for YOUR benefit, that's in effect what you're doing. I see nothing listed here about paying for interns' travel costs to the office or to run these errands you want them to run.

The terms you list are the perfect way to create resentment & ill will among interns. In fact, there's a law firm right now that is seeking out people who had illegal internships & going after employers in the entertainment industry. Wake up & look around you: tons of employers in plenty of industries are jumping on the illegal internship bandwagon & college students/newbies have had enough. Employers are being fined for having illegal internships as well.

You need to be employing some legal counsel at once since with ads like these & these sorts of working conditions, you're going to find yourself in an unpleasant & expensive lawsuit as well as with a very bad industry reputation.

The only free writing I do is for myself. Whether to increase my public persona, vent or expose people to something new that begs to be in their radar, I make those decisions on my own.

I agree with this sentiment. The art director at my company is highly talented & highly respected. We don't waste her time with bullshit since that's just disrespectful.

Now if you have no $ to pay anyone & you offer deferred pay plus expenses or equity, that's one thing. At least don't make it a loss for people working with you. Deferred pay or equity tells me that even if you don't have the money today, you're not going to dick me if you do make something from the project. Outright freebies, however? Totally a dick move.

If you've previous entries on ads I responded to that offered illegal internships & how shitty the circumstances were, you know I've said stuff about knowing they didn't have an attorney around & that they were going to eventually be sued.

Due to the nature of what I do & the fact that Craig's List is rife with scammers, I NEVER send personal details in responding to ads unless I've gotten the poster's personal details first. For one thing, there's vetting concerns. Second, I don't want someone asking me for entertainment advice (certainly not for free) or to pass a script to someone I know. I have far too much respect for my colleagues to bother them with such crap. Third, I don't want someone trying to establish a personal connection with me that I might not want to have. I network very carefully & don't deal with losers. I've also seen way too much BS (as you can read in prior entries) to take anyone seriously unless they actually answer my questions & follow MY directions.

If you're an employer who doesn't get this, then you're not one I want to deal with anyway. I evaluate you just as much as you evaluate me. Trust me, if you'd lived some of my experiences you'd do the very same thing.

In short, you can't be overly trusting of total strangers.

I've not heard anything from this one & while I may be a bit cynical as well as pessimistic, I think I'm probably right when I think I won't at all.

Here's why:

It's my theory that when a law firm says they want a "cool" or "hip" lawyer, they don't really want a cool or hip lawyer. To me, it feels just like what colleagues in the entertainment field have said about film execs who say they want something "different" but what they REALLY mean is "something that will make money but is different enough to not be a knock off of some already popular, money making film."

In the case of these firms, I think they mean they want someone who's still vanilla, bland & boring but keeps up with technology and watches television. If they really wanted "hip," I'd be hearing something. I challenged people I knew to find me a lawyer in NYC who is hipper than me. Someone who's got their own humorous rant blog, says some of the things I say, could care less about impressing anyone & defies lawyer stereotypes in the same manner I do. I've yet to find that person. If I did, that person would have to be my friend by default. I'll guarantee you none have made the sort of impression I make. People know me by my hair.

I found out at a NYCLA networking event I went to a while back that I was being identified as a redhead. That & working in the entertainment field. I'd also dare you to find someone less impressed with hierarchy or sucking up to other attorneys.

Am I right about this definition of "hip" for lawyers? I haven't personally talked to some lawyer or firm soliciting for such people but can tell you than when I see those ads & challenged them on that by responding, no one ever responded. That leads me to think that the poster is either a total liar or a moron. Neither category is a good place to be. Plus, I feel like in some cases this blog's a good screening tool. If you can't take someone who has opinions and a mind of their own + bothers to express them since silence is the same as condoning shadiness, I don't want to work with you or even know you. And just today, I saw yet another ad seeking a full time intern for help on a feature film shoot. Telsey + Co. is supposed to be legit as I've actually heard of them. That ad just tells me not to deal with them since clearly, they're either into exploiting people or haven't bothered to consult with a lawyer before posting ads that violate state & federal labor laws (aside from being insulting to the 99% who have to pay bills). Neither possibility looks good. No sane business person should strive to be incompetent or a total asshole.

Seriously, folks. Think before you post. Do you want the public to read them & say "Hmmm, how would this company treat ME if they're expecting a total stranger to PAY for the privilege of working full time for them? I bet they'll screw me over as well."

I understand the good of the team and all that but civilized people realize that if someone isn't being given equity, they're just not going to be motivated to do all that much.

To the second company, which is in my turf so definitely something I'll take personally as someone in this business doing the same thing & not wanting my rep harmed by this shit I had this to say:

Are you brain dead? Read up on state & federal laws. FULL TIME internships, which is what you posted here, are illegal. Clearly you're trying to couch this as an "intern" position to weasel out of paying someone who has skills & a financial value in the marketplace.

Saying you want "experience" is further evidence of you trying to exploit people. We aren't stupid.

I have my own entertainment company & when there's lots of work to be done & no $ to pay someone, we don't expect a stranger to work FULL TIME HOURS for us. The CEO doesn't even expect the partners to give up paying work for unpaid work. Most people aren't independently wealthy & have to pay their bills.

There are also plenty of opportunities to network in the entertainment field, get experience & credit for projects without having to work FULL TIME for NO PAY. In fact, I see nothing of travel reimbursement so not only are you insulting people by telling them they are worthless you are adding financial injury by making the person pay $104 a month for a MetroCard to travel for YOUR benefit. My company would never, in a million years, expect someone to PAY to work for us.

Maybe you should consider 2-3 people for 10-20 hours each instead of risking a well deserved crackdown on your business by state & federal labor authorities. There HAVE been crackdowns on this kind of thing.

Want to work with some trust fund baby who lives off their parents & can do this at their expense? Good luck. Even that person would resent you & not care. You may also want to start shelling out for a lawyer since you're going to need one if you think the labor laws don't apply to Craig's List ads.

Sorry but my altruism has long since evaporated. I definitely responded to this one.

Clearly, you are a younger lawyer than I am or just incredibly naive. I've been an attorney for over 4 years & I'm not arrogant enough to think someone wants to be my assistant FOR FREE. My field is probably also far more exciting than yours & more likely to compel someone to use their personal resources to work for me.

However, the difference b/t you & me is I have integrity. I would not demand someone use their PERSONAL laptop or demand them to have a monthly Metrocard to work for me since that's them PAYING to work for ME; in fact, no one has any business getting an assistant (who's not volunteered to do it) unless they can pay him/her. Those cards cost over $100 a MONTH & only people who already have full time jobs can typically afford them. Think for a second: if someone's got a full time job paying a salary, then why would they work for YOU for FREE?

This is not even an internship in the strict sense of the word: this is just asking for free labor. Even in college, I earned money at my part time jobs & applied for legal jobs offering to PAY for these tasks. This doesn't even sound like something a student could get course credit for.

Maybe I'm horribly jaded since I've dealt with scammers first hand & read some tales about attorneys behaving no better but I would never advise someone do this. If you can't even provide a computer/phone & travel reimbursement, you need to grow up & get used to how life in business actually works.

You're better off asking a friend or family member that gives a damn about you instead of expecting total strangers to fall all over themselves to spend their money to work for YOU. Do YOU like working for free (no CLE credit & not even a travel reimbursement or deduction in taxes)? Would you work for minimum wage for clients? This utterly clueless tone compelled me to respond. Here goes:

You need some lessons in how the entertainment industry works:

Lesson 1 - Filmmaking costs money. There's expensive equipment involved, permits, editing, etc. Saying "I'm not offering any pay" isn't going to cut it. Professional company = professional pay. Get the funding if you want this to happen.

Lesson 2 - Offering no money means you will not get interest from a quality film company & this little project won't go anywhere. Hope you've got a friend with a camera. Better yet, you should probably just do a video diary on You Tube since unless you can get permission from these employers to document your exploits, no one's going to care. I find it unlikely that these trading firms are going to let an intern bring in a filmmaker to tape him/her & the insides of their business.

Lesson 3 - If you have no skin in the game, you get no say & no ownership. Everyone has "an idea"; you'll also be signing a release & have no control over the final product unless you are a producer (meaning YOU have to get financing, fund it yourself & otherwise make sure it all comes together). People submit ideas ALL THE TIME. If you have no funds, a stranger's not going to care & if they do work with you, the final product might not be as you'd want it.

If you want this little documentary, go find a friend to do it. They might not mind buying film, renting equipment, doing editing, etc. on your behalf but the rest of us sure would. We have bills to pay & PAYING clients to concern ourselves with.

I think even men would want money to disrobe. Here's my response:

You expect strangers to do a TFP with NUDITY for NO PAY & you want natural redheads? Why not just ask for unicorns that can sing the score to Avenue Q? That's how realistic your ad is. Nudity is a special event & requires at least travel reimbursement.

Every ad here asking for nudity offers a few hundred dollars for it & that's not necessarily for a group that makes up around 1% of the world's total population.

Yeah, if you want natural redheads (male or female) to get naked for you you'd better be offering at least double the standard rate. Perhaps quadruple. Give the doubles & triples to other minority groups that are less rare but not as common as white folks.

If that redhead isn't Caucasian, the rate goes even higher. Same for natural redheads who qualify as little people. That's basic economics. Rare things cost more.

As someone working in this business & having friends who like having a good reputation, this required a response. It wasn't as brutal as some of them can be but it is entirely factual:

Just so you know, it's illegal under state & federal labor laws to have a full time internship. That would be called "slavery" & an attempt to cut out paid professionals by hiring unpaid interns. The state of NY has been cracking down on illegal internships so you may want to rethink posting such an ad on a public website.

Plus, you are making someone PAY to work for you since I see no mention of covering transportation costs or the ability to work remotely. This is a recession & monthly Metrocards are over $100 (which is what you're demanding be paid for a "full time" assignment). Those costs add up and don't magically take of themselves. How do you expect people to pay their rent, utlities, etc.? Do you just want some spoiled trust fund baby who's never worked for anything?

I personally work in this business & did an internship myself with a well known talent agent; however, there are rules & considerations to be made if you expect someone to work for free & have ZERO interest in your buisness. If you were offering PAY or equity for FULL TIME work that was aligned with what I have recently earned in the open marketplace (not necessarily a lawyer rate unless I was asked to use my legal license), I would consider it. I actually have experience in this business, have been told I should consider commercial work b/c of my looks + prefer working with creative types. Plus, I own an entertainment business that you could have gotten potential work from.

However, because you'd rather exploit some newbie instead of paying a professional for his/her talent & skill, I am not interested. Rest assured that I have already formed some very strong impressions from seeing this ad & will make sure my contacts steer clear of you. Thanks so much for tarnishing the reputation of this business for those who ARE professionals and would NEVER demand someone to work 40 hours a week FOR FREE. You get what you pay for.

Ads like this breed hatred and resentment for employers, especially smaller businesses though corporations do a lot of sneaky, shady things as well.

This has made me certain not to hire Donna Grossman Casting since if they can't be bothered to pay people for performing full time work (violating labor laws), imagine how many other laws & rules they violate on a regular basis. Do they place SAG talent & look the other way while clients break SAG rules? How hard are they even working for those clients?

Remember employers, job ads tell the world about you as well & ads that tell me you can't even bother having a lawyer read over them to make sure they're not violating labor laws tell me you're the same people who'd never sign contracts & expect me to "trust you" not to screw me over. Get real! Me reading such an ad is probably going to even trump my best friend's endorsement of your business (and I don't even have a best friend).

If you have a pro-bono relationship w/a "top law firm in Manhattan," then why are you exploiting some lawyer or law student? I made more than this an hour when I worked as a referral clerk in a mid-sized firm in Atlanta. The last time I made $10 an hour, I was a college student.

Unless the attorney reviewing the application is the managing partner of this firm & guaranteeing someone a job, this is nothing but exploitation (Did you know many attorneys are total assholes who would sell their own grandmothers for a nickel? They don't believe in the concept of networking or loyalty to others & I've read blogs/comments written by BigLaw folks). I say this as an entertainment law attorney myself (I just defy the attorney stereotypes though I also don't take BS). You're insulting professionals here.

Even document review attorneys earn $25 an hour or so at this point & all they're doing is clicking a screen!

Wow, you're going to pay a whopping $75 for all of this legal paperwork & demand the person to be your registered agent of process. How hard up are you as a start up to do this??? They need to be asking a friend.

Here's what I wrote in response:

Legal Zoom charges more than the $75 you propose to pay to an attorney for that kind of work. In fact, I know attorneys charge on average over $300 for this. $75 is a low hourly rate for even a BRAND NEW attorney (as in just got admitted to the bar yesterday). I've written business letters of 2-3 pages for $250.

Stop insulting attorneys with your pitiful $75 for hours & hours of work! It costs more than that to pay for ONE attorney CLE class (CLE classes are required in the state of NY for an attorney to keep a NY license) & on average, lawyers have to undertake hundreds of THOUSANDS of DOLLARS of NON-DISCHARGEABLE loan debt just to get licened.

You'd be wise to remember the saying "you get what you pay for."

It is NOT the attorney's problem that you're broke!!! We've got our own shit to pay for! Are YOU paying six figure student loan debts, many of which from private loan companies (who offer nothing but "fuck you, pay me" plans if you recall)? Unless or until you're doing that, don't talk to me about your poverty. No attorney wants to hear about that b/c we will top you. We want a fair (as in market) rate. Otherwise, you need to be asking an attorney friend/family member or making some new friends.

Hint: you will not make them by assuming the world owes you legal services & giving zero back.

This stuff is an insult & pisses me off. How likely do you think it is that I'm going to do anything to benefit you when you have insulted me? Hell will freeze over first. Stuff like that also discourages us from doing anyone a favor.

Some free tips for you:

1. Tell people what type of company you're trying to start. Don't you want a mentor that knows something about what you're trying to do??? Starting a law firm isn't the same as a film company and starting a non-profit isn't the same as starting a restaurant. Different rules, different experiences, different obstacles. Talk to someone w/some authority on the matter.

2. Craig's List isn't the forum to find a mentor. You should be trying LinkedIn. Maybe join some groups & talk to people doing what you want to do. Perhaps there's a business association or networking group for what you want to do that could also be helpful.

3. You don't tell a mentor that they have to learn from YOU or that they have to be focused ONLY on YOU. Mentorship is a TWO WAY street!!!!!!!! Plus, who the Hell are YOU that someone w/the expertise you want for some business you've yet to identify should be learning ANYTHING from you? What have YOU done? What struggles have YOU faced? I guarantee if you tell someone that without saying WHY anyone could learn from you, you'll be seen as just another arrogant Millenial & the person will be thinking the same things. People have their own shit to do as well & if you don't want to deal with that, you need to seek an actual teacher or career counselor. See #4.

4. On that note, teachers & advisers are paid MONEY for their expertise. If you want that type of one-sided relationship, you need to be offering some pay. People with skills decide if they want to volunteer their services, not the people who seek those services.

Lastly, Craig's List isn't your personal networking group & no one cares about your personal growth. You want sympathy, pay for it. Later.
