In the midst of the craziness I'm dealing with in being a cat wrangler (the vet has given our little tabby feline a nearly 100% clean bill of health; we're just waiting on the toxoplasmosis screening), I just noticed that I had all of these ads to rail on including an encounter with someone who has totally missed the boat on Networking 101.
I also encountered a fucking idiot on LinkedIn of all places who apparently decided to denounce non-Jewish attorneys wholesale and when I called him out on it, then claimed "It was a joke; I can't believe you took it seriously. We laughed about it at our office."
Funny but last I checked LinkedIn was for PROFESSIONALS who were doing legitimate things & asking legitimate questions, not a forum to attack my profession or declare yourself superior b/c you're an actor (or to jerk around, for that matter). The awesomeness of Jewish attorneys aside, don't dare make judgments about me when you've never worked with, met me in person or even spoken directly to me.
Attorneys have more education than the average actor, film exec and film producer so you best not be a prick, buttercup. You'd better believe I'm going to call out some mental midget who thinks they've got any prayer in this business by alienating entertainment attorneys. That's a promise.
Take yesterday. I saw this ad on Craig's List posted in the Manhattan, NYC section:

Seeing this & having lived in Atlanta for a time (plus not being a fucking idiot & seizing potential opportunity when I see it), I write this in response:
Some free advice: if you want to network in Atlanta, maybe you shouldn't be posting this in NYC Craig's List in the Manhattan section. You should be actually posting in the Atlanta section; you might have better luck there.
As for me, I'm an entertainment law attorney in NYC with a NY & CT law license who went to undergrad in Atlanta. If you think you don't need to know entertainment law attorneys even if you have one or they're in a different region, you're in for a massive wake up call.
Friendly enough, right? Definitely is if you know me. Plus, it's true. Remember that 98% of the creatives I encounter in this business will kiss lawyer butt & that doesn't just go for low level folks; we're also talking A-listers and people very high up in the food chain who can (possibly are) pricks to most of humanity but don't pull that with lawyers.

First off, we don't even post our attempt to network in the correct city. Manhattan does not = Atlanta. If it did, I would have found Mr. Right long before I ever moved to the Northeast. In fact, I could have had Mr. Right come with me to NYC if that were the case. Trust me, it's not.
Second, we lie about wanting to network since most people who claim to want to network are not just nice but in some ways are deferential to attorneys. I've had people outright say they were scared of me. I expect basic civility & usually get people falling all over themselves to compliment me or be nice to me.
Third, entertainment attorneys cost a shit ton of money. Friends will get reduced rates and accommodating, regardless of the industry someone is involved in. Would you behave like an ass to a heart doctor if you had a heart condition? Would you be nasty to a criminal defense attorney if you were sitting in jail? Then, why are you being nasty to an entertainment attorney if you are a performer?
Doesn't matter if you already have legal counsel. Your lawyer could die, get disbarred, retire, sell his/her firm, get fired from the mega firm, get suspended (those ethics rules can be strict), steal your money, fall off the face of the Earth, etc. No one who has or wants to do ANYTHING in the entertainment industry is nasty to a licensed entertainment attorney. Ever.
Doing so announces to me that you're not the hot stuff you think you are. If you're trying to do international work, your domestic attorney can't do shit for you when it comes to understanding those contracts. If you think you don't need a NY or CA licensed attorney to do work in NYC or LA, you're not only stupid but a class A, fucking idiot. You might as well just hand over your money to that Nigerian attorney who contacted you about your relative's estate.
Finally, this "very seasoned artist" is trying to network using Craig's List. Guess we're not so "seasoned" after all, are we?

By definition an "intern" has ZERO prior experience. People with prior experience are called "skilled workers"; those people have to be paid a wage BY LAW.
AND you want "business attire" along with someone coming to YOUR office for ZERO PAY? Who the hell do you think YOU are? Oh, and full time internships are also illegal.

Full time internships are illegal. Go read up on state & federal labor laws.
Furthermore, you're a law firm & whoever owns it is subject to legal ethics rules. I know the ethics rules of NY state apply to Brighton Beach/South Brooklyn. Have some respect for the person if you're already paying some compensation & use the term "assistant" instead of "intern" or "volunteer." That's just insulting & could easily get you disciplined for violating the law.

Why should you new attorneys be pissed off by this? I made $15 an hour on my last freelance gig & didn't have to do legal work. The work study rate at my law school legal clinic for working in the summer was $10 an hour.
Oh, and they "are firm on the starting compensation" even if someone's got years of experience but just needs a fair wage to pay student loans and put food on the table. I think this firm's partners need to live on the streets for a while. Maybe have to rely on food stamps, not be able to pay student loan debt. 30,000/12 = $2500 a month
2500/4 = $625
625/40 (though the number could easily be higher with a legal job but let's make this a minimum amount of hours you'd be expected to work) = $15.63 an hour
625/20 (the average part-time hours but with a legal job, assume you'll be expected to do more) = $31.25 an hour
This is not even taking into account taxes. Let's do that now & assume you're taking 25% out for taxes (either you personally or the employer).
2500 x .25 = $625
2500 - 625 = $1875 per month
How much are YOUR student loan debts in a month? Would this amount even cover those? If you're working full time, is this even worth it?
NYC rent would eat up nearly all this paycheck (even in Queens) unless you had roommates, lived in a rent control/stabilized apartment, got housing from Mommy & Daddy, had no children, lived in the boonies where there's zero viable public transit (where your costs would be gobbled up by travel expenses from driving) and weren't the bread winner.
I made $25K when working in a mid-sized law firm pre-law school. Oh, and 1+ year of experience is NOT entry level. Even $30k entry level for an attorney after all the schooling & student loans 90% of us have to incur is an insult.
Crap like this says to me "We want a trust fund baby to do this vs. an actual professional who can interact with the general public without being a total asshole." This is a business owner that announces to me that they do not respect or value legal services to offer such a pathetic rate.
This is a paralegal wage, not a wage for a licensed attorney subjected to ethics rules & who has to pay for CLEs, bar association fees, malpractice insurance, student loan payments, etc.
What "excellent writer" is going to jump on this? Even a trust fund baby who could have gone to Harvard would be able to get far more lucrative job offers than this insult. I would hope any of you who read this blog & aren't dealing with student loans or came from some Ivy League school i.e. could get a BigLaw job in 5 seconds would be insulted by this on general principle.

I would love this opportunity. Somehow, this attorney figured out the perfect arrangement for this legal warrior. Why is it so ideal for me?
1. I don't want to leave my field of interest but as we all know, very few entertainment professionals make a living solely from entertainment work.
2. "Rainmaking" & "marketing" are synonymous with NETWORKING & HUSTLING. These are things I have done a lot in my career. When you own a business, you have to.
If you've got passion for something, it's also very easy to do. People have said to me that my passion for my business/the entertainment industry is obvious & undeniable.
So, could I do this? Yeah! Actually, hell fucking yeah.
3. Most attorneys aren't good at selling themselves. Many will outright tell you this. Few actually do what this lawyer did & actively seek out a partner to just handle that stuff. They try to do it all or make someone do the marketing/rainmaking AND do cases.
4. I don't want to do the client work. I tried doing that; it didn't work well for me. Litigation & court proceedings in particular are not something I consider a solo endeavor. I could do them in a team but not all alone. If it's not an entertainment or strictly transactional matter with a limited duration, I don't want to deal with it. No one I've encountered has bothered to consider paying me a fair rate for it.
My particular circumstances don't even allow me to invest in years on a case.
I want to know why in God's name I can't do this for some firm. Why can't some established attorney/firm realize that it's not good at marketing to some target population & outsource to someone who IS personable, accessible, understands the attorney perspective + has my looks? Most female attorneys aren't getting mistaken for actresses like I often do.
Most don't have the acting training or even my contacts, especially at the stage I'm in. Oh, and show me the attorney you're going to remember after a second meeting.
The only people who don't remember me after meeting me once have mental defects or are just aching to be my future victims if I ever have to go on that crime spree since it would require little for me to victimize them.
It feels like the only way you could do this is if you do BOTH the legal work & the networking, work on commission (which I refuse to do when I'd have to travel, go to networking events, lunch, meetings, etc.) or deal with someone who isn't established enough to pay you a fair wage. You also can't get most attorneys to admit that they have shortcomings & maybe bother being fair to someone who has the skills they don't.
I think $50K a year minimum is more than fair for me to do such things or equity in a profitable practice with coverage for travel costs, admission fees to events, etc. along with autonomy for me & a reduced salary that will still cover student loan payments that's not based exclusively on commission or a draw.
I don't make beelines for people 5 seconds after I arrive someplace & I'm not a huckster. Let me work my way & don't penalize me if I don't bat 1,000 every single time.
A fair job where I made $50K a year would be fine for me but apparently, the employers I see posting ads act like asking for it is akin to demanding one of those $1,000 gold flaked sundaes from Serendipity 3 served on a silver platter (even if you have prior experience). Frankly, if someone can't meet my minimum, they've told me they have no respect for me or my abilities which = they are assholes & I don't want to deal with them. Would you?
Find me that firm or attorney. Seriously, I'd consider such an arrangement. With my name & heightened profile, it looks like you'd be dumb not to talk to me about such things. The average person doesn't want to talk to a stuffy BigLaw suit; they want a living, breathing human being they can shoot the breeze with and let their hair down around.

If a company wants quality work and a professional, then they have a budget. If they're too greedy to pay for a photographer, why should you give away your hard work and time for free?
Every day I see more and more of these posts and it's unacceptable. We have to stand together and mark them all as spam. Respond to these posts and tell them how it doesn't work that way. I know I do! We have bills to pay like everyone else. We work hard, we don't ask people for free advertising or free camera gear. We pay just like everyone else.

And maybe you should explain the relevance of some of your listed requirements. You apparently can't be bothered to tell anyone WHAT industry the job is in, the exact tasks/duties involved or use proper spelling & grammar in your ad. Classiness comes from speaking like an educated person instead of some entitled prick who will always be a wannabe & never become legit.

The deception in the heading vs. the text also really made me mad. You can't slap the word "intern" and have it magically be legal to ask for free labor. Plus, when law firms & lawyers do it that diminishes me & every single attorney practicing in this state, this country and everywhere else. This was my response:
Funny, but this isn't a job where one needs to "intern" to do it. I'm a lawyer so I most certainly know this for a fact. If you can't afford to pay a living wage to a professional, stop wasting everyone's time looking for a freebie.
Maybe someone should investigate you for ethics violations considering this is likely illegal under state & federal ethics laws. You're not even paying for people's travel. In reality, you're charging people to work for YOU.

We did this in law school. It was called an internship. During those internships, we worked on the legal matters around our class schedules. We did not have to slave day & night on a case in the law school clinic unless it was the summer & then, we got work study rates i.e. we were PAID for our time in either school credit or hard earned money.
I was not asked to do that when my clinic was doing a trial the summer I worked there (I was on the work study rate of $10 an hour; yes, this was the work study hourly rate for law students when I was in school). Nor was I required to have a law license ahead of time.
For those who aren't lawyers, let me tell you something about trials. Trials are like working as the lead actor on a major TV show or film. Your entire life is consumed by the trial. You have to work very long hours, you generally can't deal with anything else and it is a huge investment of time and energy. If you're doing a trial, you don't have a social life & you'll be lucky if you get 8 hours of sleep a night. In the big firms, associates working on trials don't get that luxury.
You have client meetings, depositions, research to conduct, etc. This is all part of trial prep. Oh, and you'll probably have to take work home since everything changes in a second & there's lots of rushing around involved.
Seeing this prick expecting people to give up their entire lives & offer zero in exchange is outright sick. Do you see a word about travel reimbursement? Meal reimbursement or paying for meals when late hours are required? This is a perfect example of slavery & it should not stand. This person should be reported & if I knew who it was, I would have to in good conscience.
Oh, and do you know how long trials last? They can run from a few days to a few months. Some even go into years. How do you know this person isn't trying to get freebies for a trial that will last half the year? You don't.
Those associates make over $100K a year to do that shit. If you're lucky, you're working 40 hours a week; those are considered part time hours to trial attorneys.
This goes back to that whole "don't be an asshole" rule. Even paying people the work study rate is better than expecting them to pay to work for you & give up their hunt for paying work.
Newsflash: not paying for someone's Metrocard is making someone pay to work for you if they can't work from their own house & you are making them come into your office.

I'm glad to see someone else schooling ignorant, pathetic people who don't even have the sense to get legal counsel or hide their ageism like everyone else. I directly asked the poster how he'd like it if I asked him to do his actor coaching services for free with nothing for him in exchange. This guy then responds saying all lawyers who aren't Jewish are scumbags. I ream him out privately for bashing me as a non-Jew when he didn't know who the hell I was & informed him that there are plenty of people who own companies in Hollywood and elsewhere in the entertainment field who would consider him a bigot.
Now I know some perfectly nice Jewish people & some Jewish lawyers who are also good folk. In fact, I have a generally better attitude toward Jews (at least in America) since they aren't being obnoxious assholes to the general public & trying to impose their ways onto everyone else like the Christians are (the fundies & lunatic fringe, anyway; too few non-lunatic Christians stand up to these jerks & smack them down for their massive hypocrisy).

Plus, when law firms & lawyers do it that diminishes me & every single attorney practicing in this state, this country and everywhere else. This was my response:
Funny, but this isn't a job where one needs to "intern" to do it. I'm a lawyer so I most certainly know this for a fact. If you can't afford to pay a living wage to a professional, stop wasting everyone's time looking for a freebie.
Maybe someone should investigate you for ethics violations considering this is likely illegal under state & federal ethics laws. You're not even paying for people's travel. In reality, you're charging people to work for YOU.

Yes, lawyers have ethics rules they are supposed to be following. Jumping on the illegal internship bandwagon is one thing I would love to see the state bar snatch licenses for. We did this in law school. It was called an internship. During those internships, we worked on the legal matters around our class schedules. We did not have to slave day & night on a case in the law school clinic unless it was the summer & then, we got work study rates i.e. we were PAID for our time in either school credit or hard earned money.
I was not asked to do that when my clinic was doing a trial the summer I worked there (I was on the work study rate of $10 an hour; yes, this was the work study hourly rate for law students when I was in school). Nor was I required to have a law license ahead of time.
For those who aren't lawyers, let me tell you something about trials. Trials are like working as the lead actor on a major TV show or film. Your entire life is consumed by the trial. You have to work very long hours, you generally can't deal with anything else and it is a huge investment of time and energy. If you're doing a trial, you don't have a social life & you'll be lucky if you get 8 hours of sleep a night. In the big firms, associates working on trials don't get that luxury.
You have client meetings, depositions, research to conduct, etc. This is all part of trial prep. Oh, and you'll probably have to take work home since everything changes in a second & there's lots of rushing around involved.
Seeing this prick expecting people to give up their entire lives & offer zero in exchange is outright sick. Do you see a word about travel reimbursement? Meal reimbursement or paying for meals when late hours are required? This is a perfect example of slavery & it should not stand. This person should be reported & if I knew who it was, I would have to in good conscience.
Oh, and do you know how long trials last? They can run from a few days to a few months. Some even go into years. How do you know this person isn't trying to get freebies for a trial that will last half the year? You don't.
Those associates make over $100K a year to do that shit. If you're lucky, you're working 40 hours a week; those are considered part time hours to trial attorneys.
This goes back to that whole "don't be an asshole" rule. Even paying people the work study rate is better than expecting them to pay to work for you & give up their hunt for paying work.
Newsflash: not paying for someone's Metrocard is making someone pay to work for you if they can't work from their own house & you are making them come into your office.

I'm glad to see someone else schooling ignorant, pathetic people who don't even have the sense to get legal counsel or hide their ageism like everyone else. Oh, and we all know Fashion Directors & Stylists must be as glamorous as the models they are dressing or it's a detriment to the marketability of the company. Since I have met people that prejudiced & stupid, I'm pretty certain these ads I see aren't joke ads though one has to wonder. If you're posting it in the jobs section, which costs money in NYC, then you've just shown you're a spendthrift with no concept of the value of money. I can be humorous without spending money.
In fact, I send anonymous resumes for some jobs I see where employers posting the ads gave zero information. One person from a law firm said it was funny & got why I didn't want every Tom, Dick and Harry having my personal info though the job had already been filled.
Maybe I should look into this. Apparently, someone else thought my response to a so-called "joke" posting on LinkedIn was funny. Yes, I said "LinkedIn." You know, the site for professional networking & for professionals to interact?
I chewed someone out for trying to get legal services for free & subvert lawyers in favor of agents. I directly asked the poster how he'd like it if I asked him to do his actor coaching services for free with nothing for him in exchange. This guy then responds saying all lawyers who aren't Jewish are scumbags. I ream him out privately for bashing me as a non-Jew when he didn't know who the hell I was & informed him that there are plenty of people who own companies in Hollywood and elsewhere in the entertainment field who would consider him a bigot.
Now I know some perfectly nice Jewish people & some Jewish lawyers who are also good folk. In fact, I have a generally better attitude toward Jews (at least in America) since they aren't being obnoxious assholes to the general public & trying to impose their ways onto everyone else like the Christians are (the fundies & lunatic fringe, anyway; too few non-lunatic Christians stand up to these jerks & smack them down for their massive hypocrisy).
That, however, doesn't give anyone a pass to defame me or anyone who doesn't fit that category. He responds that "It was a joke" & I made his office laugh.
Okay...so was it actually a joke that you decided to post on a LinkedIn group (you know, that space for professionals to have professional conversations instead of just goofing around) or did someone have to cover b/c an angry redheaded lawyer wasn't taking shit & you didn't want her to share your refusal to listen to non-Jews with everyone she knew, including producers, production company owners, attorneys, etc.? Who knows?
I wonder if you can start a career being a humorist by calling out the BS as you sees it & reminding folk that you can't demand resumes when you aren't even telling us what business you are in? I just don't take shit & as I've said a hundred times, people should play to their strengths instead of trying to be something they aren't.
My husband also claims I'm too blunt in writing cover letters. I suggested he write his own if he didn't like my style. I don't write wimpy letters oozing in desperation or engage in dog & pony shows. I give information I'd want if I were the employer. I also ask questions if someone can't bother answering them in their ad.
If they don't answer, that tells me they are not worth my time or consideration. If they ask me to send materials & then reject what I send, I really want to smack them. Latham & Watkins did that recently when I asked about a job for spouse. The HR person who'd told me his experience would be fine for a job opening they have posted multiple times over months writes back the next day to tell me it wouldn't be. I thought of writing her back & saying "Thanks for wasting my time. I know whose law firm will never be retained by anyone I know if a legal issue arises."
Seriously, business owners: what you do reflects on your reputation. If I think you're lazy, inefficient, a time waster, a jerk, a hypocrite, etc. I'm not going to bother with you. I'm going to look at any employee of yours with that mindset & presume they are also lazy, inefficient, a time waster, whatever. That is also why I try talking directly to the person in charge instead of HR. It is rare I find an HR person who can answer questions about applicants who are out of the box & hasn't wasted my time. Those people out to form an uprising & get the deadbeats out of their profession. Yeah, I'm all about uprisings.

What the Holy Fuck?!?!? Craig's List Ads, Part 5
I was going to do a rant on how I feel like a second class citizen and excluded from bar associations I'm supposed to be paying all these ungodly dues toward but it seems I already covered that 2 years ago. Go here to see it. Still accurate & still holds up.
I also do still feel like a second class citizen with all that so just assume I'm not going to spend $25+ on a ticket to an event my husband wouldn't be welcomed at and where I wouldn't have the best company to deal with (since I'd likely know very few of the attendees if any & would be shocked if any bothered being genuinely nice to me or interested in anything I did or cared about).
I think there should either be an option for far cheaper tickets for young attorneys (let's say $20 each or $30 for couples if your spouse is also young, works for the government on any level & is making less than $75K a year or is unemployed) or a severe reduction in the dues we're paying if we can't even go to these annual parties & bashes. If we're such "riffraff" to the higher ups in the way these ticket prices are set, then why should we have to finance those affairs?
I'm also in a very bad mood since an event I was planning apparently can never happen at the time I want since the association closes an hour before my event would need to start on that day. Nice of anyone to TELL me this!!! I had to call & find out myself.
I also found out that if you want a large event & it's not a CLE, you will get zero time to publicize it & could very well have your event sabotaged. Sorry but my circle lives in a different sphere, has busy schedules and needs some notice. I'm trying to respect their time & make things convenient for them. After all, THEY are the ones doing favors here! They have their own cred & reputation. Having them is a privilege. Having me bring folk in is a privilege.
My husband reminded me that I'm not getting paid to do this so I'm not beholden to anyone. I don't have to play political games or put up with BS.

You list this after listing, among your "Key requirements" that the person has the "* Ability to work full-time (30+ hours)"
Have YOU ever worked a full time job? Have YOU tried to job hunt in that time? When would your little "intern" be able to go on a job interview? Most offices do not do interviews on weekends. They also typically insist on an IN PERSON interview; how is your "intern" going to arrange that? Are you planning to give this person time off b/c this sure doesn't sound like a position where you're offering ANY schedule flexibility. Oh, and this intern will be at a total disadvantage to apply for anything while doing YOUR work & NOT getting to apply for jobs until God knows how many other people already send in THEIR resumes.
I'm also willing to bet the "stipend" you offer will be something that won't be a per hour or week wage but something the person gets at the end of the term since you seem that scummy. I'd also bet that you'd make up some arbitrary BS to deny the person the "stipend" since they didn't lick your boots well enough. Nor do I see a word about travel reimbursement for the person going to your offices.
Get your head out of your ass & join us in REAL LIFE. There is a law firm that handles shitheads like you who are trying to bring back indentured servitude. My problem here is the salary they offer. I made $8 an hour working at Godiva in Atlanta. When I interviewed for that job, my boss said my prior experience at JcPenney wasn't relevant to him. Yet I got hired anyway & did well while he was manager. I made $10 at other jobs in undergrad.
And no "former lawyer" I know of is so hard up that they're going to do all this stuff for a mere $8-10 an hour. You would have to do less in a retail job or even at the local fast food joint. Someone with prior experience at this stuff is not worth this piddling rate, which translates at below $25K a year in income. At part time hours, you're probably talking about qualifying for welfare benefits.
Go do some extra work for Central Casting instead. At least then you can maintain some dignity & wear clothes you wouldn't get to wear otherwise.

Sounds good until you do the math. Here's my response:
Your rate is illegal. Follow me on this little math calculation:
12 hrs a day x 7 days a week = 84 hours a week
600 (what you propose to pay a week) / 84 = 7.1428.....
In THIS state, minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Your rate is $7.14 an hour, which is clearly BELOW the minimum wage in NY. If you are lying about location, minimum wage is $7.25 an hour in NJ and higher than that in CT.
A little free advice: if you want a GOOD person who's going to give a damn & do the kind of work you want, you might want to pay a little better than minimum wage. Personal assistants performing the tasks at the hours you are asking for (at the expense of their own lives) make a good $70K+ a year.
Try at least $25 an hour if you want someone to give up their entire life for the next 2 months & during the holidays to boot. Come to think of it, considering you're asking folk to give up Christmas maybe you should offer around $40-50 an hour.

Guess who I'm making sure my company doesn't work with? No company needs the tainted association of or friendship with a business owner that doesn't bother knowing the basics of labor law or has any respect for interns, one of the most vulnerable groups in this industry.
I had to say something:
You DO know that full time internships are illegal under state & federal labor law, right? As in, you can't make someone work 40+ hours a week for free. That is NOT an internship; it is slavery & displacing professionals who have a value in the marketplace.
Not to mention that some of the tasks you list would require an intern to travel. Do you expect an INTERN to PAY to work for you? Without covering travel done for YOUR benefit, that's in effect what you're doing. I see nothing listed here about paying for interns' travel costs to the office or to run these errands you want them to run.
The terms you list are the perfect way to create resentment & ill will among interns. In fact, there's a law firm right now that is seeking out people who had illegal internships & going after employers in the entertainment industry. Wake up & look around you: tons of employers in plenty of industries are jumping on the illegal internship bandwagon & college students/newbies have had enough. Employers are being fined for having illegal internships as well.
You need to be employing some legal counsel at once since with ads like these & these sorts of working conditions, you're going to find yourself in an unpleasant & expensive lawsuit as well as with a very bad industry reputation.
Lastly, remember the old adage "you get what you pay for." Quality costs money & no one deserves to be exploited.
I as a business owner totally evaluate you & your business based on how you treat your front line people. If you're abusive to the sales associates, receptionists, interns, servers, anyone who's got a "low level" position, I'm not interested in dealing with you. Treating those people like crap says you will totally treat me like crap sooner or later or worse, you're just a brown nosing scumbag (and if you've read this blog, you know how I feel about those).
I also evaluate a business based on their job ads, including grammar concerns and expectations vs. the offered compensation. When those are out of whack, you create a negative impression that leaves a very nasty taste in my mouth. I'm going to do my best not to help you or do anything that might remotely benefit you if you are some chucklehead who can't even master simple concepts like treating others as you'd want to be treated.
I also do still feel like a second class citizen with all that so just assume I'm not going to spend $25+ on a ticket to an event my husband wouldn't be welcomed at and where I wouldn't have the best company to deal with (since I'd likely know very few of the attendees if any & would be shocked if any bothered being genuinely nice to me or interested in anything I did or cared about).
I think there should either be an option for far cheaper tickets for young attorneys (let's say $20 each or $30 for couples if your spouse is also young, works for the government on any level & is making less than $75K a year or is unemployed) or a severe reduction in the dues we're paying if we can't even go to these annual parties & bashes. If we're such "riffraff" to the higher ups in the way these ticket prices are set, then why should we have to finance those affairs?
I'm also in a very bad mood since an event I was planning apparently can never happen at the time I want since the association closes an hour before my event would need to start on that day. Nice of anyone to TELL me this!!! I had to call & find out myself.
I also found out that if you want a large event & it's not a CLE, you will get zero time to publicize it & could very well have your event sabotaged. Sorry but my circle lives in a different sphere, has busy schedules and needs some notice. I'm trying to respect their time & make things convenient for them. They also typically insist on an IN PERSON interview; how is your "intern" going to arrange that? My problem here is the salary they offer. I made $8 an hour working at Godiva in Atlanta. When I interviewed for that job, my boss said my prior experience at JcPenney wasn't relevant to him. Yet I got hired anyway & did well while he was manager. I made $10 at other jobs in undergrad.
And no "former lawyer" I know of is so hard up that they're going to do all this stuff for a mere $8-10 an hour. You would have to do less in a retail job or even at the local fast food joint. Someone with prior experience at this stuff is not worth this piddling rate, which translates at below $25K a year in income. At part time hours, you're probably talking about qualifying for welfare benefits.
Go do some extra work for Central Casting instead. At least then you can maintain some dignity & wear clothes you wouldn't get to wear otherwise.

It could very well be a scam operation like the one I experienced years back.

Sounds good until you do the math. Here's my response:
Your rate is illegal. Follow me on this little math calculation:
12 hrs a day x 7 days a week = 84 hours a week
600 (what you propose to pay a week) / 84 = 7.1428.....
In THIS state, minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Your rate is $7.14 an hour, which is clearly BELOW the minimum wage in NY. If you are lying about location, minimum wage is $7.25 an hour in NJ and higher than that in CT.
A little free advice: if you want a GOOD person who's going to give a damn & do the kind of work you want, you might want to pay a little better than minimum wage. Personal assistants performing the tasks at the hours you are asking for (at the expense of their own lives) make a good $70K+ a year.
Try at least $25 an hour if you want someone to give up their entire life for the next 2 months & during the holidays to boot. Come to think of it, considering you're asking folk to give up Christmas maybe you should offer around $40-50 an hour.
That is market rate, folks! You violate paying someone the market rate at your own peril. Don't come crying to me or anyone else about how your assistant or your intern stinks when you aren't even offering a living wage.

Guess who I'm making sure my company doesn't work with? No company needs the tainted association of or friendship with a business owner that doesn't bother knowing the basics of labor law or has any respect for interns, one of the most vulnerable groups in this industry.
I had to say something:
You DO know that full time internships are illegal under state & federal labor law, right? As in, you can't make someone work 40+ hours a week for free. That is NOT an internship; it is slavery & displacing professionals who have a value in the marketplace.
Not to mention that some of the tasks you list would require an intern to travel. Do you expect an INTERN to PAY to work for you? Without covering travel done for YOUR benefit, that's in effect what you're doing. I see nothing listed here about paying for interns' travel costs to the office or to run these errands you want them to run.
The terms you list are the perfect way to create resentment & ill will among interns. In fact, there's a law firm right now that is seeking out people who had illegal internships & going after employers in the entertainment industry. Wake up & look around you: tons of employers in plenty of industries are jumping on the illegal internship bandwagon & college students/newbies have had enough. Employers are being fined for having illegal internships as well.
You need to be employing some legal counsel at once since with ads like these & these sorts of working conditions, you're going to find yourself in an unpleasant & expensive lawsuit as well as with a very bad industry reputation.
Lastly, remember the old adage "you get what you pay for." Quality costs money & no one deserves to be exploited.
I as a business owner totally evaluate you & your business based on how you treat your front line people. If you're abusive to the sales associates, receptionists, interns, servers, anyone who's got a "low level" position, I'm not interested in dealing with you. Treating those people like crap says you will totally treat me like crap sooner or later or worse, you're just a brown nosing scumbag (and if you've read this blog, you know how I feel about those).
I also evaluate a business based on their job ads, including grammar concerns and expectations vs. the offered compensation. When those are out of whack, you create a negative impression that leaves a very nasty taste in my mouth. I'm going to do my best not to help you or do anything that might remotely benefit you if you are some chucklehead who can't even master simple concepts like treating others as you'd want to be treated.

My Predictions Are Coming True & People Reading Craig's List Ads are Fighting Back
Yes, some of them are.
The first is that for now, things are working out on my husband's job front. Maybe someone did their homework on me or realized that maybe it wasn't a good idea to start triggering angry natural redhead lawyer wrath so they'd better not transfer him to some hellhole area & invite trouble. So that whole being spared from falling trees on Amtrak turned out to indeed be a sign that the situation would be resolved.
The second is that people are fighting back against shitty job ads on Craig's List. I swear I didn't write any of these but I kind of wish I had, especially the last one.

The only free writing I do is for myself. Whether to increase my public persona, vent or expose people to something new that begs to be in their radar, I make those decisions on my own.
I also get to work on my schedule, not anyone else's & retain some creative control. If I didn't get that, what on Earth would be the point? I did a book review for NYCLA that's going to be published soon. It was through my choice & at my husband's suggestion. Plus, it's on a book that I felt the legal community should be exposed to since how many people do we have who hate their law firm jobs, other lawyers or any variation of those? Lots.
I also like to see things that aren't your typical bland, boring or stuffy content that gets characterized as being "for lawyers." I sure don't fit those things myself so if no one else is going to step up, I guess it's up to me to inject the controversy.
Considering I've gotten paid to write (and done lots of different styles of writing) plus was told I'm talented by people who actually know what they're talking about, I won't work for free. I also get offended by resume/cover letter ads asking people to write them for $25. Please! I'm a business professional & a licensed advocate. Getting a letter from me is at least $100 for an hour considering the high praise my letters have generated & my knowing what it's like to be an interviewer. Give your $25 to your best buddy, not some stranger on Craig's List.

Now if you have no $ to pay anyone & you offer deferred pay plus expenses or equity, that's one thing. At least don't make it a loss for people working with you. Deferred pay or equity tells me that even if you don't have the money today, you're not going to dick me if you do make something from the project. Outright freebies, however? Totally a dick move.
If you want to be a legitimate company & get respect from people, don't do it. You will be known as those cheapskate assholes who exploit creatives. People talk & you could easily get blacklisted if you mess with folk.
Plus, I just don't trust anyone offering future work unless they're going to put that in writing. No writing = go fuck yourself. Professionals aren't stupid & anyone with a brain respects people for protecting themselves. I'm proud to see someone doing this. I hope it's legit since that would make this one of the most awesome law firms ever. If you've previous entries on ads I responded to that offered illegal internships & how shitty the circumstances were, you know I've said stuff about knowing they didn't have an attorney around & that they were going to eventually be sued.
Looks like there's an attorney working on that. I love it! I'm tempted to contact this firm & tell them of their awesomeness; I hope this ad is still up on Craig's List. Maybe they should read some of the ads I've seen & the dressing down I've done of people doing that shit.
I wonder if they're exclusively going after entertainment/creative companies or if they're also going to go after the law firms offering this bullshit. I'm proud to see someone doing this. I hope it's legit since that would make this one of the most awesome law firms ever. If you've previous entries on ads I responded to that offered illegal internships & how shitty the circumstances were, you know I've said stuff about knowing they didn't have an attorney around & that they were going to eventually be sued.
Looks like there's an attorney working on that. I love it! I'm tempted to contact this firm & tell them of their awesomeness; I hope this ad is still up on Craig's List. Maybe they should read some of the ads I've seen & the dressing down I've done of people doing that shit.
I wonder if they're exclusively going after entertainment/creative companies or if they're also going to go after the law firms offering this bullshit. I hope they smack down the law firms I've seen doing it; that would tickle me & make me laugh at some folks' misfortune (and some people truly deserve it).
So, fuckers with an entitlement complex: perhaps this firm will sue your sorry ass for expecting people to be your slaves. I hope other firms will follow suit since this is a prime example of "serving the public" and all those high lawyer ideals we're supposed to (in theory at least) be living up to. Bravo to these folks! Glad to see I'm not the only one who finds that stuff offensive & has high standards. This also makes me feel vindicated when I've been strict on how the internships are structured in my company & how folks are treated.
