Now I'm no fan of SJWs (social justice warriors for the unenlightened) and third wave feminists on general principle. How come? The short answer is both groups are hypocritical, obsessed with being politically correct and never listen to the opposing viewpoint but instead resort to shrillness both in tone and shutting down the other side (such as calling people who disagree "racist"). They are certainly as big of bullies as any of them would deem Donald Trump to be. I swear the man could eradicate cancer, give every US citizen a million dollars tax free, murder every domestic abuser & gang banger in the country and people would still hate his guts.
Take the Kathy Griffin incident. She does a photo where she's holding a bloody, severed head of Donald Trump, gets all kinds of public backlash, including from the Trump family THEN turns around a files a lawsuit against the Trump family for harassment. What kind of logic is that? Who is honestly seeing viability in this case?
If I were on that jury, I would think she brought any harassment she claims to have suffered on herself. How would she like it if someone did that holding HER severed head? Wouldn't her kids and her family have a right to be upset? Maybe nobody loves her and she has no children or family members who give a damn if she lives or dies. As she may not even be a natural redhead (I don't know), I should point out that not all natural redheads are uneducated liberal mouthpieces. Some of us actually have fully functioning brain cells and use our critical thinking skills. Yet it seems some brainwashed SJWs and third wave feminists are on her side and seem to think having a vagina makes you God. No, it doesn't.
This is perhaps one reason SJWs and third wave feminists have no business being in the industry but I can identify much closer to home reasons why they need to get the fuck out: they preach for superiority not equal opportunity & support censorship of dissenting viewpoints. They are more than happy to ignore the reality that freedom of speech and employment laws apply to straight white men just like anybody else. I'm actually a member of a social media group that deals with entertainment and some members post job ads.
One such ad sought a "female director" with no details on this project indicating that a female director was essential to doing the job and that a male couldn't do it at all. When one man pointed this out, a significant number of females and minorities chimed in on "why not" and didn't seem to get that "promoting diversity" is not an exception to federal labor laws. I, as an attorney, pointed out that this person just handed someone who could allege employment discrimination Exhibit A for their case to win against the offender trying to do this. Unless you can provide a "bona fide business reason" to discriminate on the basis of race, gender, age, and so forth, you don't get to do that. That's why you can't post a job ad saying "no blacks/Jews/Mexicans/Muslims/women/Irish/whatever" unless it's for an acting or modeling job where you're casting for a particular role or the designer has a particular demographic or body type for his/her collection. Abercrombie isn't required to hire full figured models for their ads anymore than a director is required to cast a woman to play Romeo in "Romeo and Juliet." Implicit discrimination is the same thing as explicit discrimination per legal precedence.
Some of these ignoramuses had the gall to think this was okay because of their dislike for straight white guys and their having lots of jobs in entertainment. Wow, what does that make you when you're telling some white guy "too bad" about this? Are you really any better than the white people who said that to black people who complained about segregation and employment discrimination?
Newsflash: there should be more diversity in Hollywood and the indie film world. But if you want that diversity, you need to be privately contacting female directors or gay filmmakers or whatever "diverse" category of choice person you wish to work with. Go find those people and network with them. Go seek out their works. Go ask those people who they know who might get overlooked generally but who is great at their craft. Get off your duff and start finding these people. Pay them what they are worth.
Most importantly, find the people who are good at this stuff regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Plenty of people are good on their own merits that they don't need some handout based on affirmative action. What they need is to get into the doors and for the gatekeepers to get to know them on their own merits. We need gatekeepers to have interactions with other groups where people in those groups are professional, humble and just as competent as anybody else without thinking they're God or entitled to anything because of some "minority" designation. We also need the people with talent to show they have it, not spend their time waiting around on a handout or demanding a handout. Almost nobody is handed a career in entertainment so people will heavily resent the whole "I'm a minority" card. If everyone else has to hustle, guess what entitled SJW/third wave feminist? YOU have to hustle too.
Any competent producer of worth hires based on the person, not their race/gender/nationality/orientation.
Maybe the biggest reason SJWs should not be in this field is that art is about telling a good story that everyone finds relatable in some fashion regardless of their race, gender, orientation. If you can tell me a story that might be about a culture or people who have nothing in common with me on the surface but as we go along, you show me there is commonality and a reason for me to empathize with these characters/this culture you're doing it right. If you sit down and say "I'm going to write a story that will appeal to women/gay men/Muslims/whoever," you're doing it wrong.
Art is not a segregated medium and should never be treated in that way. Being a good storyteller has nothing to do with your gender, race, age, sexual orientation, religion, political party and so forth. Your goal there is to show me how you see the world and why I should care about your world/perspective. A good writer is sharing a truth & I personally feel something that is great is something that makes me look at a situation differently, changes my perspective, shocks me, isn't predictable but ultimately shows me that we're really not so different from one another. Others may define their good in different ways but ultimately you're supposed to be telling a story that lots of people can relate to.
I think as an indie film person since I've heard all sorts of really nasty things about Hollywood and don't feel it's a world I could relate to. I'm the type who insists on doing things on her terms or not at all; I'm not about selling my soul or degrading myself to get someplace. I'd rather die with my morals than live as a puppet or a shill or a slave. There may be other "minorities" who feel like I do and there may be some willing to sell their souls. That's a personal decision and also has zero to do with race/gender/orientation/etc. Regardless, anyone should get the opportunity to do what they will.
Getting opportunity has nothing to do with special privileges you demanded from others, which never works in life. People hate feeling policed or like they MUST consider such things in hiring decisions. I've made my own stance on who I am clear in prior entries, even talking about why I wouldn't join a "women's group" and how I don't want to be known for being a "woman" this or that since I'm not some inferior who's just good at it "for a woman" or even "for a natural redhead."
Finally, to address the third wave feminists they don't belong in entertainment because getting offended at old white men calling you "sweetheart" or some other term of endearment that comes from their being from a different generation and time or even geographic region (these types would explode if they had to live in the South where such greetings from strangers are commonplace) is going to be a problem for all concerned. It creates drama as well as trite offense and nobody wants to deal with that. That rage needs to be saved for real sexual harassment situations like groping and being propositioned or told you have to come across to keep your job or get a role. Why not address that stuff instead of whining because someone said "good morning" to you? People who do that diminish real situations and actual victims of sexual harassment; they make things a hundred times harder on them.
Third wave feminist types embody the eggshell skull types we hear about in law school; actually so do SJWs. Those people bother me personally on many different levels and I'm always relieved and gratified to find others who feel the exact same way. Those others have tended to cross racial, gender, socioeconomic and sexual orientation lines. It gives me hope for the world.

Why Politics Suck in a Very Short Entry (At Least for Me)
I recently went to a program called "How to Get on the Ballot in NYC" that was one of the rare free programs at the NYC Bar Association. There were people involved with the whole Board of Elections process and how you get yourself on the ballot for anything. My takeaway from it was the precise answers why politics suck & you see a lot of lawyers involved in it. Here goes:
1. The petition process involves not regular attention to detail but an exacting standard just about everyone outside the legal profession would be hopelessly inept at trying to figure out if they didn't already know how to do it or have some political guru on their team already.
2. So this means you need friends in law & politics; your average poor person or lower middle class type shuns those in law with such knowledge (mostly attorneys) as elitist assholes. I wouldn't know with certainty how they view politicians and those working in that area but I'd imagine their views of those people aren't much better. Shunning people will not inspire them to help you.
3. You need trustworthy friends if you're going to run for office. I don't think most people have that. If they do, eventually their charity will come to an end & they will be haphazard even if they are those detail oriented types I mentioned above.
4. MONEY, the biggest problem of them all. You need money to run for public office, maybe pay a campaign staff, advertise, etc.
To get money, you either have to be rich already OR you have to suck up to one of the establishment parties. That requires you becoming their slave once you're in office & being beholden to them to pass legislation that's going to help them, not your constituents.
Add all this together & you get a bunch of representatives who are completely out of touch with the average poor & middle class person. Since statistically speaking, minorities are less likely to be rich, educated and have lawyer/political friends you also get fewer people who know about the experience of minorities and have real qualification to actually help them.
Laws get passed affecting the poor & middle classes that these morons know zip about or perfectly well know about but are slaves to their big money donors (remember, you've got to pay back those campaign contributors somehow).
The ones who know zip about those experiences refuse to educate themselves on the experiences of rape victims, people of color, recipients of public assistance, just about anything they've never lived and will likely never actually experience in their lifetimes. They, as many attorneys, are just too fucking arrogant to say "I need help here. I don't know how to do this/I don't have sufficient information to decide on this. Will you enlighten me?"
Big law firms, where many of these attorneys spring from, don't encourage attorneys to ask for help & even threaten their jobs if they show any hint of weakness or lack of knowledge on something. They aren't okay with you asking for help; they expect you to be an expert on everything even if you're just faking it.
5. So that ties into arrogance, bred from the experience of being an attorney with any financial means to get into public office.
Then, there's 6. Loss of privacy is mandatory to go into public office. This requires a person to be a full on narcissist in order to do the job rather than have any concern for the public trust or helping people vs. donors and the establishment.
Now I've told you why politics sucks. How do we fix it? You tell me. These are the reasons I'm pulling for either Trump or Sanders. They defy this formula in different ways, particularly in not being beholden to big money donors.

How to Fix Unions...Did I Mention How Much I Hate Laziness?
Real life has been getting in the way lately. For one thing, my husband got the week off work so he could hang out with me on my recent birthday. Yeah, yeah. Happy birthday to me & all that good stuff.
I also have a TON (and I'm not kidding about this) of birthday gift certificates and promotions to use up before the end of this month that I'm still trying to go through. We'll see how that plays out.
One thing that absolutely has killed me is that you can't be an actual boss if your employees are unionized. Nope, you are apparently given zero right to change anything & when the lazy leeches who have done nothing for God only knows how long start a petition against you for daring to make them earn their paychecks, the supervisor is apparently punished.
This scenario is playing out for a unionized employee I know of right now.
The types of changes we are talking about are having a written schedule, making people accountable for things and incorporating things like e-mail into the workplace. God fucking forbid! I mean, how many people use e-mail on a daily basis at work?
We were using e-mail at my law firm job in 2003! I was using e-mail in my college dorm room before 2000.
E-mail is an inevitable part of life. Now deal with it, damn it!!
If you aren't tech savvy, hire an assistant who is. Pay a fair market rate.
If you don't & then bitch and moan about using technology that well over 75% of the national population is using (as well as significant segments of the global population), then be prepared to be fired, labeled an old foggy who is out of touch with modern times and denigrated by all the young people.
Also, prepare to have all the young people hate your guts for sucking away wages they could be earning & for having to constantly teach you "how to MySpace" since you refuse to listen and write it down so they don't have to do it a trillion times, over & over again. You're probably also going to make them hate you for doing YOUR work & not getting paid for it. I wouldn't do it & I sure would have my hand out for extra money.
If you somehow miss the chopping block today, then prepare to be the first one laid off when hard times hit.
I also find it incredibly sad that these employees have to be at least middle aged & think they get paid to sit on their asses and hang out like the workplace is their house and their bosses are Mommy and Daddy there just to placate and amuse them. Apparently, I had more work ethic when I was 15 years old and fighting to get my first job at JcPenney as well as working my ass off at that job to prove I was no irresponsible teenager than these old fart union slugs who are doing nothing but wasting people's money.
I wonder what the people paying these people's salaries would think of this. I know if it were me, I'd be pissed off. I would refuse to pay a dime to the employer until the lazy union slugs were out the door & kicked square in the ass for their laziness.
If you tried this shit in my business, you would have your ass kicked out the door in a heartbeat. We wouldn't even have to think about it. I have fired people before & when someone's being a fucking lazy asshole, I have no qualms about telling that prick about the hundreds, thousands or millions of people in the location who would do twice the work for half the wages that lazy asshole is earning & for doing what, exactly? Sitting on one's ass? Goofing off? Watching TV?
Gee, I had to EARN my law license. I had to take the bar exam, go through a character & fitness review, continue to do CLE training & pay a decent amount of money for licensing fees. If I don't do my job or I make some colossal mistake that would qualify as a violation of Lawyer 101, I have a grievance filed against me & could get called before the ethics committee. I don't even get to violate the legal ethics rules in my off time; forget about my moonlighting as a dominatrix. Try that & you'll get fired or disciplined. A colleague told me & some other lawyers about that happening to a female co-worker of his who was no longer working there. Oh, and this was a government job!
Yes, I believe in earning your paycheck vs. sucking money away for doing zip or being an incompetent, lazy buffoon!!! I can't blame private employers if they are hesitant to consider my husband for jobs in the mistaken belief that he's a union slug b/c of all his experience in a union job. If you're reading this now, let me tell you he's not.
In fact, he fucking hates the union at his job since most of the staff he has to deal with would have been kicked out long ago if there were no such thing as a union to protect their lazy, incompetent behinds. If you're a regular reader of this blog, you may already know what I'm referring to. I'm speaking of people who do not perform basic customer service functions, flat out don't do their jobs, harass customers, use racial slurs, etc. Not to mention the layoff lists.
Want to fix things? Here's my proposal:
1. Make performance count far more than seniority. If you can't pass a basic performance review but have been working there for eons & eons, you should not get to be retained over the hardest & best worker there who has been there less time than you. I know your boss agrees with me.
2. Make it far easier to fire someone for insubordination, sexual harassment and anything that would make a reasonable person angry: Why should a sexual predator, a racist, a thief, a disrespectful prick who thinks he's above the rules or any other type of person you'd not want serving in the military get to keep getting paid to do this shit?
3. Make it illegal for any union to restrict the paying work for its members: If you aren't offering paying union work, you don't get to tell a member of your union not to take a non-union job that will pay their rent, food, gas & other bills.
If you think you can, I suggest you offer that person a place to stay, food to eat, etc. Otherwise, shut your trap until you are paying for that person's survival. Get bent, suck an egg, whatever phrase best suits you & your condition. The people most likely setting up those rules are union leaders making far too damn much in salary.
4. Finally, if your union has been found guilty of embezzlement or some other form of corruption then the individuals involved are forbidden from setting up another union ever again in this country. If you do, it won't be recognized. Bring some standards back to leadership!
Plus, trusting people who stole before is a lesson in stupidity barring some serious oversight from an outside source & mandatory disclosure of public records along with having to justify your existence on a yearly basis. We have the Internet; it's time to use it to vet the garbage.
Without this, you can pretty much call me anti-union & that's not solely because I own a business. I'm anti-union based on my husband's experience & how pathetic his faux union is. Overpaid, fat, bloated ticks is how I see that leadership but it's like which group of overpaid, fat, bloated ticks is worse: the people running the union or the people running the library? Or I should say "the people running the library into the ground."
I can understand the groups that are against unions. However, that's not to say there should be zero standards at all. There are plenty of dumbasses running businesses just based on Craig's List ads alone. I saw one recently that must be shared to be believed & was from an attorney of all people.
No laws means everyone posts up ads for illegal internships for things like legal services, performing brain surgery and who knows what else. Maybe someone would even post an ad asking for an intern escort or exotic dancer. I would hope people working in those fields would say "Hell no!" and have that person killed. I think that would be the one time people rooted for the pimps.
Next thing you know, there'll be ads for "Intern Strippers!" I saw one for "Intern Administrative Assistant" recently & had to respond.
For those asking "What about the union members' families?," guess what? Maybe that union member should have thought about that before screwing up at work!
It's not the employer's job to worry about feeding the employee's kids or catering to an employee's refusal to do the job (s)he was hired to do. As the saying goes, "You breed 'em, you feed 'em." Plus, a little time having to earn your way in life might teach you some appreciation for having a job & rid you of this entitlement complex, oh lazy asshole. I agree with the Protestant work ethic attitude of "If you don't work, you don't eat."
Call me heartless all you want. Hard workers & ambitious types don't want to carry your lazy ass. We'd rather you just froze in the cold & give our aid to people who aren't able to do the things you could but just refuse to. You want loyalty & respect? You have to earn it, bucko! If you have & the employer is being a dick, then the employer should be punished & deserves to have bad employees.
If you aren't suffering from a legitimate health condition (physically or mentally), you are precisely who I'm talking to. If you're unhappy in a job, you have zero right to take it out on customers & the general public. You need to just get the heck out & let someone else who'd actually give a damn have a shot.
For those hoping to solve this problem by having an employee owned business, let me tell you something: it's not easy to be a business owner. If you think it is, you're an idiot & had better be schooling yourself on how to do it. Otherwise, shut up & get out of the way of people who know what they're doing. Inevitably, people like me will be cleaning up your messes.
Oh, and if you dare to sue on some ground like discrimination when you were fucking up expect your work history to come into evidence.
Being a member of any minority group is not a Get Out of Work Free card!!! You also do a disservice to everyone else in your group & make it that much harder for them to get respect from the work force as well as society as a whole.
Oh, and I'm sure your ancestors would be pissed at you undermining their struggles & experience with your bullshit. They'd probably be thrilled to get the job you're pissing away with your laziness.
I know I don't need married women making it harder on me by leaving in 3 seconds to go have babies. I know working mothers don't need other mothers neglecting their jobs for their kids. That stuff just makes it even harder for married women & parents to get any respect in the workplace or even get considered for jobs. If I wanted to be sabotaged, I could find that on my own without lazy assholes of my gender causing trouble!
Same goes for any other group. I'm sure you hard working members of various racial & ethnic groups also appreciate the jerks making it harder on you to get ahead, fueling further entrenchment of negative stereotypes against you.
See, these lazy union members should thank their lucky stars not to have met me since I would call them out. I wonder how some of these lazy idiots who have zero work ethic would react if I told them they have less work ethic than I did at the age of 15.
I would also be making sure the people paying their salaries knew all about this & were outraged. In fact, I'm outraged that some of these people who work with my husband are still employed since that would never, ever fly in my company. I would also tell them that if they worked for me & did XYZ crap they did, I would toss them out in a heartbeat with no regard for their starving family. Perhaps I could go all Joe Pesci on them but maybe I'm scary enough without that.
"Don't fuck with me" is the lesson. A good business owner has to command that as well.
If you don't, you are very likely going to end up on television as a business owner who is royally screwing up (in the vein of Bar Rescue, Restaurant: Impossible, et al.). I can respect Donald Trump for not taking shit in his business along with his willingness to be roasted for Comedy Central. You think he'd put up with the crap union jobs seem to allow in employees?
I don't & think it's time for serious changes. I don't care what a bunch of old, lazy dinosaurs think about not getting to be paid to slack off or scratch their private parts on the clock. Get off your ass & do your damn job or get the hell out of the way so the better people who actually value a job & take some personal pride in doing a good one can take over! Protect your neck (as the Wu Tang Clan would say) & all that, business owners!
I also have a TON (and I'm not kidding about this) of birthday gift certificates and promotions to use up before the end of this month that I'm still trying to go through. We'll see how that plays out.
One thing that absolutely has killed me is that you can't be an actual boss if your employees are unionized.
